Always take this medicine exactly as described in the Consumer Medicine Information leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist have told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The recommended dose is one tablet a day. - Do not take more than this recommended dose of one tablet (20 mg) a day, even if you don't feel an improvement immediately. - You may need to take Nexium 24HR for a few days before experiencing the full effect. - Nexium 24HR should be taken for at least 7 days and up to 14 days. - Tell your pharmacist or doctor if you do not feel better while taking Nexium 24HR. If symptoms persist or recur within 2 weeks of completing the course, consult your doctor. Further examination may be required.

Nexium is used to treat symptoms of heartburn, acid reflux, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Esomeprazole is also used to treat esophagitis.
NEXIUM 20mg tablets may be taken on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal) or with a meal. You should take about 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
Take the medication at the same time each day to maintain its effectiveness. Do not take more than once per day. The dose may be increased to 20mg or decreased to 5mg based on your specific needs.
The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Children's dosage is also based on weight.
The use of Nexium may increase your chance of a stomach ulcer or stomach bleeding. If you get any stomach side effects, stop taking Nexium and call your doctor at once.
Take the medication with a full glass of water (8 hours after a meal).
If you have trouble sleeping, you may take this medication.
Take this medication with food to prevent it spreading to the stomach.
Swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush or chew them.
Do not take this medication with milk, calcium-fortified products, dairy products (such as calcium-fortified version of calcium products), or antacids (such as multivitamins and antacid products). Taking this medication with antacids can cause drowsiness.
Do not drink alcohol while you are taking Nexium. It should be part of your daily routine. Limit or avoid alcohol while you are using Nexium. You may become dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness during treatment with Nexium.
This medication may increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke. If you notice any of these rare but possible side effects, stop using this medication and call your doctor at once: drowsiness, dizziness, headache, trouble sleeping, stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting. These are not all the possible side effects of Nexium. For more information, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Important: This medication is not an over-the-counter antacid. You must drink alcohol while taking this medication.
Tell your doctor if your condition lasts or gets worse.

ContraindicationsSulfonamide medications including antacids and certain antibiotics can sometimes cause increased frequency of toothbrushes. If you are taking sulfonamides then you should avoid or use another sulfonamide. Tell your pharmacist or doctor if you are taking medications containing magnesium, calcium and aluminum as Nexium 24HR may cause increased frequency of toothbrushes. Do not take antacids or certain antacids containing aluminum within 2 hours of taking antacids containing Nexium 24HR. Taking these medications in the morning is worth a possibility. However, if you are taking them at the same time each day, it may be necessary to keep a daily or two-tablet separate from your morning or evening medications. Taking Nexium 24HR in the morning can lead to increased frequency of toothbrushes. However, it is advised to start taking Nexium 24HR when you, the doctor, the patient and the doctor have taken Nexium 24HR. Patients with heart problems, including sudden death.
