In a study published online March 27 in
Journal of Consumer Health, researchers in thefound that the over-the-counter Nexium has a significantly lower risk of heart attacks and strokes than the prescription version of the drug.
The findings are a welcome sign that Americans are embracing the over-the-counter options that are widely available to treat prescription heartburn and other symptoms of heartburn. And yet the findings remain mixed.
The study, published in the, sought to answer the question "What's the difference between over the counter and prescription drugs?" The researchers looked at 2,093 consumers in the U. S. and found that in the U. S., the over-the-counter versions of the prescription drug Nexium had a lower risk of heart attacks and strokes than the prescription drug, Prilosec. And while the prescription version of the drug had a lower risk of heart attacks and strokes, the over-the-counter versions of the prescription drug had a lower risk of heart attacks and strokes.
According to the research, the over-the-counter Nexium is available at a much lower cost than prescription versions of Prilosec, a brand-name prescription drug sold by AstraZeneca.
AstraZeneca said the results were significant because consumers would be able to save money by buying a prescription-only version of Nexium over the counter without insurance coverage.
"Over-the-counter Nexium is a widely available prescription drug and it is affordable," said Dr. Steven Nissen, a urologist at Johns Hopkins Hospital. "However, consumers should know that they can't buy over-the-counter Nexium without insurance coverage."
While the study was published online March 27 in the, Nissen's study was also published in amagazine.
The authors noted that the study's findings are in line with many other studies that have shown that over-the-counter Nexium can be purchased without a prescription.
"It is important to emphasize that consumers should not purchase prescription Nexium over the counter," said Dr. Nissen. "This study is the first to evaluate the risk of heart attacks and strokes associated with over-the-counter Nexium."

However, they also noted that the overall risk of heart attacks and strokes in the study was small and that consumers may have less confidence in the over-the-counter Nexium.
The study also showed that while the over-the-counter drug Nexium can be purchased without insurance coverage, the over-the-counter formulary, which covers the active ingredient, was slightly more expensive than the prescription drug Prilosec. The over-the-counter version of Nexium, Prilosec, is also available in the form of a capsule.
